Name: Ryan Irwin
Height: 5’4″
Contest Weight: 145
Offseason Weight: 165

First Bodybuilding Contest: 1993 Natural Iowa
Best Contest Placing, Which Show(s): Won the short class at the 2009 USA and won my IFPA Pro Card. In 2005 won the overall at the Great Lakes in IL, in 1998 won the collegiate class in the Best of the Midwest. Placed 6th at the St Louis IFPA pro show in 2010.
Bodybuilders/Fitness Competitors who physiques you most admire or Good role models: Big fan of Layne Norton as he is a powerlifter/bodybuilder, which is the same as myself. Also one who looks for scientific research and proof to back nutrition, supplement and training methods. Ryan Doris and Valentine Ezugha come to mind having amazing physiques too.
Long Term Bodybuilding Aspirations: I achieved winning my pro card in 2009, now my goal to to be able to balance family, career and powerlifting with the sport that I love.
Favorite Training Day? Why?: It would have to be legs. When I started bodybuilding I didn’t like training legs but quickly realized symmetry is key and that I had to train them just as hard. Leg day is what separates those who just workout because it’s fun and those who push themselves beyond what the body wants to do.
What do you like most about weight training?: Being able to see your body get stronger and progress. It really is a science, taking measurements, keeping records and manipulating all the variables to continue progress.
What advice would you give other beginners?: Keep a journal. This will help you make sure you progress and help you achieve the most efficient results as possible. Make sure the journal tracks both your workouts and your food. Also, get a solid workout routine and stick with it so you can progress. Finally, two words that are absolutely the biggest thing that will take you the farthest: DEDICATION and CONSISTENCY.
Your favorite training meal? Why?: Tuna mixed in with oatmeal. It is delicious and came about simply from having both two foods on hand at the time I needed protein and carbs. Decided to combine together and boom!! Tabasco sauce can be added for extra zest, broccoli and almonds for some crunch.
Tell something about you outside the gym: I have been married since ’98 and have 2 great kids. Own my own business which is a nutrition store and personal training studio. I love to motivate others to be their best in all aspects of life.

Featured Athlete:

Justine Albert–born dancer, athlete and competitor.

At just 25 years old, Albert sets her sights high. The Apollo, Pennsylvania resident owns and operates her own dance studio, Just Dance by Justine Albert. The studio enrolls almost 300 students each year, ranging from ages 2 to 18. Her love of the sport along with her passion in fitness has been a strong influence to others in her academy, offering intensive studies in ballet, pointe, jazz, modern, hip hop and acrobatics. Outside programs also include a boot camp class, “Boot Camp-J-Style.”

Albert began her fitness career early on after joining the Kiski Area High School track and field program at age 16. It was there that she spent her days conditioning in weight training that led her to participate in the program as a collegiate athlete, placing 3rd overall in the WVIAC her freshman year at Seton Hill University, and becoming the first female track athlete at the college to ever place in conference championships. Albert gives credit to her father for her natural athleticism.

“Although I knew I had much to learn in technique, I owe it to my wonderful father for passing along his natural strength to me! I knew the weight room would become a daily part of my life when my first attempt on the bench press I put up 6 reps of 160 pounds , as a 16-year old girl who had never lifted before.”

Albert’s drive for competition has continued to be a huge contender today. Just recently, Albert competed in the 2013 Natural Pittsburgh show, sponsored by Dean’s Fitness Center, placing first in the Overall Figure category. “I was excited to compete in my first show,” Albert said. “It was wonderful meeting others who share my same passion. My mentor, trainer and partner, Jim Jackson of BodyMechanics Personal Training, introduced me to the world of bodybuilding and figure shows, and for that, I am so thankful he has came into my life. I look forward to many other years in working together!”

What’s next for the young entrepreneur? Albert will continue to keep active the remainder of the 2013 season, being a positive role model for her dance students and spending time with her fiancé, hunting and fishing, amongst leisure time with family and friends.

PROMOTERS: RENE AND JENNIFER MARTINEZ

The Martinez family is no stranger to the NANBF circuit. Husband and wife team Rene and Jennifer knows what it takes to run a show, and what it takes to be a top competitor. Since 2009, the duo joined the North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation as promoters, and have continued their strong stance ever since.

A former competitor himself, Rene has placed in the upper echelon of competition, as well as taking the title of Mr. Natural Nebraska in 2008. Following his success, he wanted to be able to bring a show close to home, and one that would drive those to win surrounding the Nebraska area. It was then that The Max Classic was born. But it wasn’t enough for these two–In 2011 Rene and Jennifer took over the Mr. & Ms. Natural Nebraska show, making the show more centrally located. With the right amount of competitors, both shows would be able to hold a pro-qualifier! To date, the duo have also become directors for Nebraska within the Federation.

“All of our success with the shows have been absolutely amazing,” Jennifer said. “As   promoters, we keep it organized and fun. Each year, we continue to acquire quality competitors, allowing us  to give the Natural Nebraska title in each open category! The best part about this, apart from running a show, is the lifetime friends you keep, some even becoming family.”

In 2011, the team welcomed their first child, Evan, who is already a veteran to the fitness world. Thanks to mom and dad, he’s also a natural!

Between preparation for shows each season, the Martinez’s will keep busy with the family-run business, The Max Fitness Center. The center has been open since 1999, and was located to Norfolk, Ne., in 2002. It’s a sure fit for the two who offer personal competition training while traveling and volunteering to assist other promoters during the season. This fall, Rene plans to compete after recovering from a neck injury.

Sportsmanship

$

0

Young impressionable minds may be observing your behavior and this could have a significant impact. An NANBF athlete or official is a role model, whether they choose to be or not. Anything less than a positive role model is unacceptable by NANBF guidelines. It is important that you conduct yourself as a professional at all times.

  • Poor sportsmanship like conduct on stage, backstage or during any NANBF sponsored events
  • Mental, physical or verbal confrontation with competitors, NANBF officials, event staff or fans
  • Verbal threats, taunts, or gestures based on race, creed, ethnic origin, gender, religion or sexual orientation
  • Profane language, display of anger or lewd behavior
  • Having to be removed from a NANBF sponsored event
  • Use disrespectful or derogatory comments, cheers or gestures
  • Criticize officials in any way – display of anger, use of profanity
  • Incite fans, competitors or staff.

Judging and Banned Substances

New to Judging 2011; Crossovers
Due to our expansion of competitors and the shows becoming so large, there is a chance for potentional flips or reverse placements. This is when competitor A beats competitor B earlier in the day then later B beats A. This can happen as fast as 15 minutes to 1 hour. Reasons why this occurs is 1) competitor B did not pump up or their carb load timing was off during the earlier part of the day 2) athletes physiques can improve as time goes by 3) with shows becoming larger the competitors sweat more causing their physique to look harder and leaner and 4) there are some competitors that may be very nervous the first time and then more relaxed later on.

Banned Substances: NANBF/OCB/IFPA Drug Testing Guidelines
Drug testing screening methods used at Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders (OCB), North American Natural Bodybuilding Federation (NANBF) and International Fitness & Physique Association (IFPA) events are a means to determine eligibility. If competitors can not successfully pass any screening methods used, they will either not be allowed to compete if determined prior to the event (Ex. Polygraph test), or will be disqualified and be removed from official results if determined after an event (Ex. Urine test).

Nutrition Tip

Consuming carbs during exercise can improve performance. This works by helping to maintain blood glucose levels and preventing hypoglycemia, rather than by sparing muscle glycogen. Keep in mind, I’m talking about maximizing exercise performance here, not fat burning. If you’re doing aerobics simply to burn fat then you don’t want to eat anything during exercise because this will decrease the utilization of body fat as fuel. Competitive endurance athletes may however improve performance by consuming a carbohydrate drink during exercise, such as Parrillo Pro-Carb Powder™. This will help replace fluids as well as maintain blood glucose.

At this competition she showed up to compete with herself. Being included among so many stage ready bodies was winning for her, but this sport is contagious and after a few more competitions her goals began to change. A constant support, her husband Mark, encouraged her to compete in the NANBF Pro Qualifiers. On August 18, 2012,  hope became a reality! At the Trojan Classic in Troy, Alabama, Mendy Lynn earned her pro card and joined the NANBF Pro Bikini division. Bikini competitors are true athletes. True athletes understand what it means to pay now so they can enjoy later.  Going pro is like that. There is nothing that compares to it!

The mother of three awesome girls, and headed towards her 25th anniversary this year, Mendy Lynn is a certified personal trainer at Laser Sharp Fitness and owner of Chic Clique.  Her passion is to help others achieve their personal best in fitness.  She wants you to know: “ You CAN achieve your hopes and reach your dreams. Have faith and take risks!”
